TRACK: The Shins - Turn On Me

Kyle Spratt - Slim Sellout

Did you guys hear about the 18 year old Ontario rapper, Kyle Spratt who stole Kim Mathers cellphone at a bingo hall that she frequents & then called Eminem to try to get him to listen to a demo?!

That’s ballsy! Eminem was none to pleased with the phone theft & calls, in face Eminem denied he was himself when called and Kyle recorded the conversation, as well as conversations with the police who Marshall contacted afterwards.

Kyle took all this media and concocted a pretty hilarious Eminem diss track attacking Marshall, Kim & their parenting skills. No holds barred!

iPhone Commercials

Apple has released some commercials for the iPhone, and it's official release date has been set for June 29 (U.S. only). I'll admit, I didn't really care about the iPhone at all until I saw these. The interface looks amazingly slick, although it seems like your fingers would start hurting after all that rubbing. And there's no way their touch screen would be usable by hands as giant and manly as mine.

LCD Soundsystem / Montreal / May 9th 2007

Even though the sound was not that good (feedback festival) and the band being plagued with less than par music gear, LCDSS rocked the Spectrum and had us on our feet wiggling our tails off. Let's not kid ourselves, it's sad to see the legendary Spectrum go but the sound has always been shit for "louder" acts. The future of live shows in Montreal is not with 1000 seater rooms it's less than that (LaTulipe, Le National, L'Olympia, etc.) or its bigger like the Metropolis.

here's an excerpt of "daft punk is playing at my house" as seen and heard by jules...

The Arcade Fire / Montreal / May 13th 2007

Critics were a bit hard on the band i find... yes the venue has probably some of the worst acoustic qualities that a venue can possess, yes the crowd wasn't super demonstrative... but saying the band lacked energy is simply not fair.

here's a visual argument from my perspective!

what am i listening to...

  • Amy Winehouse's new album... cause she's honest and true to herself. she's telling it like it is and is not falling for the pressure that a second release is often plagued with.
  • New Modest Mouse album "we were dead before the ship even sank". I was never in love with their first release apart from the first single "float on" which is still pretty fresh when i hear it.
  • Under the influence of giants' song "in the clouds" just because it's synth galore and i like heavy synths and it makes me tap my foot.
  • Charlotte Gainsbourg - 5:55... especially the track "the song that we sing" (and all other english songs) i can't really say why i like the song, i just do. deal with it... hehehe!
  • The Sounds' 2006 track "painted by numbers" i forgot about this release for a while but it's damn good and catchy like i like 'em...
  • There you go 4 out of 5 choices are women singers... what can i say the girls are the new boys like gray is the new black.

Credibility... everybody wants it, few really achieve it.

I'm usually not a big fan of those "lists" because they can't be entirely true. This one comes pritty close i must say and it's not just a simple enumeration, you'll also find the explanation and the angle.

read it!

and another AC post...

Arcade Fire have ended a few shows with in-crowd performances, but the first song, "Neon Bible" is fun to watch, if only to see how the whole band fit in one elevator. They save some space by eliminating percussion-- the band hit the elevator walls, and Richard Perry rips the pages out of a magazine to give the song a small, gentle beat.

The Machine is Us/ing Us

A really clever animation explaining how the internet
got started and where it is going. ENJOY!

it's a bit techy but nonetheless quite enjoyable. you'll see.

I was there and you weren't :) heheh

as matt said... 3 words to describe the show > communion, orgie et énergie!

what an amazing show even more intense as the corona shows i've seen in april of 2005 if that is possible. a great balance between new material and old stuff. they opened their set with keep the car running in my opinion one of the best track on neon bible.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS:

- win playing his guitar and singing off the stage with the crowd in rebellion lies
- one word : TUNNELS
- great rendition of no cars go
- the soft but amazingly powerful my body is a cage
- acoustic version of wake up with regine, win, tim and richard on the floor with their instruments (see video below)

what am i listening to...

here's the artists/tracks that have been rocking my boat lately...

  1. Peter, Bjorn & John - understated arrangements, killer melodies, unique vocals and intense rythmics. a must hear... especially the track "young folks"
  2. The Knife - this artist's tracks have been playing in my ipod for a couple of years now but their latest effort "silent shout" is a gem of post-techno beats layered with all sorts of other analog or synthesized instruments. the unique vocal approach of karen dreijer as well as her sometimes tortured lyrics are the perfect amalgam for my lil' ol' ears. also worth a listen is jose gonzales' cover version of the knife's heartbeats which can be heard in the amazing sony bravia ad with all the colored superballs (180 sec. extended version)
  3. The Shins - their new album is a real melodic accomplishment. the videoclip for the track phantom limb is for sure one of the best i've seen in a while and the track is nothing short than stellar... great vocal harmonies, very well produced. subpop definately hit one out of the park on this one. (see the video below)

ENJOY!
cheers,
j

WOW! Aqua Teen Hunger Force Bomb Scare In Boston

art project / guerilla marketing project / publicity for a left field cartoon show caused all this mayhem in Boston yesterday. Now 2 unemployed and starving artists may suffer the consequences of this genius marketing ploy.

The 2 dropouts who got paid to put them (the "devices") up around the city have been arrested and charged with perpetrating a hoax or something... What hoax? It was the city that thought they were bombs and closed bridges and cancelled buses, etc. Bloggers knew what was really going on hours before the city did. And 9 other cities figured it out without causing panic.

best press conference EVER!

see a behing the scenes video of the installation process.

a glimpse into my daily online routine...

I, for one, hate doing the same things over and over again... but for some reason, which i ignore, it seems that i've been returning to the same sites for a while now for my daily dose of news, music, funny shit and other cultural enlightments.

so here we go:

- ROCKETBOOM > daily video blog based in NYC covering all types of fierce subjects, from sociological, cultural and environmental standpoints.

- THE SHOW with ZE FRANK > zany character doing the thinking so we don't have to. SO BRILLIANT yet SO FUNNY!

- PITCHFORK MEDIA > online music news resource, album reviews, etc. to consult if you're looking for little musical gems.

- DRUDGE REPORT > great "left field" international news resource (they're the ones who broke out the lewinski story couple of years back)

- STILLEPOST.CA > sometimes funny, sometimes informative but always addictive... reading 16 year-olds try to own each other all day long is quite funny...

thats it for now...
